Newbie Questions
Question 1: Is there an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for FTA receivers?
Answer: NO. There is a guide for Bev and some true FTA channels but none for Dish network programming. However, some higher end models (ie. Dreambox) have been reported to have guides and the DVB cards have guides also.
Question 2: What LNBs work with FTA receivers?
Answer: Dish network and Dtv single LNBs have been reported to work. Also Dish network's DishPro LNB has been reported to work.
Question 3: Can I get DTV with FTA?
Answer: No. The FTA system receives nagravison streams. This stream is currently being used by Dish network.
Question 4: Are FTA receivers HDTV compatable?
Answer: No. No current FTA receiver is capable of broadcasting HDTV. However some manufacturers have reported to have new HDTV FTA models available soon.
Question 5: Is there an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for FTA receivers?
Answer: Refer to question 1
Question 6: Is TIVO and ReplayTV compatable with FTA Receivers?
Answer: Yes. However TIVO stand alone units are the only ones currently being reported to be able to control FTA recievers and provide onscreen program guides. More info on TIVO units here. ReplayTV can only be used with limited functions.
Question 7: Do FTA units get ECM'ed?
Answer: Not really. By law satellite companies can not use an Electronic CounterMeasure on these units, but the satellite companies try to deter users from accessing their programming by "speeding" up the broadcast stream which causes a nag or (glitch) on the receivers. This is often easily fixed and no reciever has been reported to have been damaged by this method.
Question 8: Can I use my SW switch that was provided by my Dish network system to add more dishes?
Answer: No. You will need a disreq switch to add more satellite dishes to your system.
Question 9: Do these receivers come preprogrammed?
Answer: Some dealers offer to preprogram these units but this is a high risk purchase. Although the units thenselves may be perfectly legal, the software that is programmed on these units makes them illegal. A purchase of a preprogrammed unit will make it an illegal transaction and if these dealers were pursued by the authorities it may be possible for them to trace the purchase back to you. There is enough free information on this board and others to get you started.
Question 10: Is there an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for FTA receivers?
Answer: Refer to question 5
